Top 12 Most Iconic Romcom Movie Outfits

Romantic Comedies are the perfect movies for any occasion. Need a quick, emotional pick-me-up? A movie to binge at your sleepover? Or perhaps a Valentine’s Day watch? Their romantic, uplifting, and optimistic nature accompanied with classic plot-lines and catchy soundtracks are more than enough to keep viewers coming back for more. From the classics, like “Dirty Dancing", to newer ones like “No Hard Feelings”, they are a globally revered genre. Yet no matter the Romcom, I think we can all agree that there is always that one Romcom with The Outfit. The outfit you can’t help but imagine yourself wearing as you walk towards the movie’s main love interest or perhaps your own date (official or not). Perhaps, you throw in a musical number or run through an airport to chase down and confess your true love to your partner. Well whatever the case is, the question still stands, which iconic romcom outfit is your favorite?

1. 13 Going on 30: Striped Dress

To start, my favorite romcom of all time: 13 Going on 30 starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo. Truly a movie that marks the golden age of early 2000s movies, consisting of a perfect wardrobe, phenomenal soundtrack, and poised plotline. Seriously, no notes. The dress itself though is fun and playful, similar to that of a Katy Perry music video, but cute and iconic nonetheless. Paired with the vibrant makeup, butterfly necklace, and early 2000s up-do, this dress demands a spotlighted dance of Thriller by Michael Jackson. 

2. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days: Yellow Backless Dress

First off, wow just wow. What a spectacular dress, from the timeless open-back to the beautiful buttercream yellow color, this dress is just pure perfection. No further explanation needed. 

3. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: Hot Pink Jacket

A romcom classic and the main reason Netflix will always be one of my top streaming services. Yet again another iconic soundtrack, trendy wardrobe, and wholesome plot line. Plus, we all need a Peter Kavinsky… I’m still waiting for mine, jk jk. 

4. 10 Things I Hate About You: Blue Dress

Ok, where to begin? Firstly, do I want to be Kat Stratford or befriend Kat Stratford? What a self-sufficient, smart, and sarcastic queen, love her. Truly an inspiration. From the gorgeous deep blue dress to the chiffon scarf accessory, what a 10/10 prom dress.

5. Pretty Woman: Red Dress

I can’t possibly write an article about romcoms and not include The Rom Com Queen herself, Julia Roberts. What an icon. The dress is a beautiful deep red with a classy sweetheart neckline and tasteful white gloves. Once again, no notes.

6. My Best Friend’s Wedding: Purple Dress

Alright, last Julia Roberts mention I swear. But I just had to include this iconic film and dress. 100% giving Megara from Hercules vibes, with the sarcasm to match, naturally. What a breathtaking dress though with a beautiful purple hue and off the shoulder cut. It’s so refreshing to see an actual stylish bridesmaid dress cough cough Mom…

7. Crazy Rich Asians: Blue Tulle Dress

Ah yes, my favorite “Airplane Movie”- short and sweet, great actors, and amazing cinematography. What a great movie, truly. The dress is phenomenal as well, with delicate tulle embellishments and a classy v-neckline. 

8. Dirty Dancing: Pink Dress

This dress needs no introduction. Timeless. Classic. Nostalgic. The dress all of our moms wanted to buy right after seeing “Dirty Dancing” for the first time. Another 10/10!

9. No Hard Feelings: Hot Pink Mini Dress

This romcom is fairly new, yet became a quick hit shortly after being released on Netflix. Funny and sweet, relatable, and, most importantly, stars Jennifer Lawrence. Plus, the dress is bold and cute. 

10. Clueless: Yellow Plaid Set

Moving away from dresses now, this set was the iconic outfit of 90s rom coms. Yellow and plaid don’t seem like a great combination - but when paired with Cher’s witty and flirtatious personality - iconic. 

11. Legally Blonde: Pink Lawyer Attire

Ok, almost there. This dress is stylish, cute, and pink, just like the infamous Elle Woods. Plus, Elle Woods would totally look flawless in this outfit at an AMHS Mock Trial event. “What, like it’s hard?” 

12. Grease: Black Leather Outfit

And last but not least, an oldie but a goodie. Sandy’s iconic black leather outfit from Grease. From the high heels, red lip, and curled hair, Sandy is definitely looking like a heartbreaker now.

Although all of these outfits are iconic and memorable, my personal favorite is Sandy’s. Saving the best for last in my humble opinion. The classic leather jacket and bold red lip will always hold a special place in my heart. From Grease’s classic musical soundtrack to the Pink Ladies and T-birds, this movie will always be a superior romcom. This outfit is definitely the one that I want.
