The Green Light

An homage to The Great Gatsby

The Green Light:

i used to hate the great gatsby

an old and overtold story

full of rich people with even richer dreams

but upon re-reading this weathered down classic

I realized I don't hate the characters for who they are

but rather how I see myself reflected in them

the certain one in particular being Gatsby himself

I never really understood him when I first read the book

I was only 13 after all, still young and carefree

and he was full of hopeless dreams and unrequited love

something I could never relate to, even in my wildest dreams

until i did

gazing upon the green light from across the bay

just waiting and watching

reminiscing over memories from a time not too long ago

I see myself in him

both of us torturing ourselves with cruel hope

that foolish and undeserved hope

yet still we stand and wait

hoping to catch a glimpse of the love we once knew

the hearts of those we once healed and held

but the truth of the matter is

you can't repeat the past

no matter how hard you might plead and try

and perhaps that is the saddest truth of them all

because it's so hard the make them understand

why you wait in hopes for them to come back once again
