Breakeven:
What was once so soft and gentle, seemed strong and unwavering
What used to be so kind, now only seems cruel
Letters littered with false truths and broken vows
Sealed with sweet sentiments and hidden behind “I love you’s”
With lies seeping between long, intangible lines
From words once written to comfort and soothe
Unable to forget the pure heart that these phrases once poured from
The burden of a broken heart is both jagged and rough
A hearth that was once bright, now only burns and singes
Furious flames, tinged with hate, and fueled from past-love
Like a child who used to be so full of joy and bliss
But has grown up to feel the bittersweetness of life
Now, only a broken person that clings on to false hopes
Nothing left but tear stains and a fractured spirit remaining
Tainted by the hard truth that life tests you
That change is the only constant and nothing lasts forever
And as their heart begins to crack and bleed
They hurriedly rush to cover the wounds
To hide the pain that echoes throughout
To preserve the last shreds of dignity that they have left
Scattered bits chipping away into nothing but sharp shards
Behaving as broken glass, unable to be swept away, and seen through easily
Mirroring the facade they present, false and transparent
Inaccurate in depicting the true reflection of their sorrow
And no matter how desperately they may try to cover it up
To conceal the hurt that cuts deep, and stings further
To try and move on with their life, with so much yet to be lived
Towards the path of healing and a promise of chance
But nonetheless, they are unable to do so, incapable in a sense
Because when a heart breaks, it never breaks even
For one heart is always wounded, and scarred
Yet, eventually heals, and remains unscathed overall
While the other is left shattered, and broken to bits
Irrevocably changed and never to be quite fully fixed
